OpenEdge™ Application Server

OpenEdge Application Server is a dynamic, standards-based transaction engine that provides a reliable foundation for high-volume secure transactions, user interface independence, and a service-oriented architecture.

OpenEdge Application Server provides a foundation for a flexible and extensible application infrastructure. OpenEdge Application Server supports an open, component-based model for partitioning applications, allowing them to be transformed into modular elements within an integrated environment. This enables business logic to be easily distributed and reused, saving time and resources. By partitioning applications and separating the business-processing logic from the user-interface logic, applications can be made available to users through virtually any interface. Centralized business logic offers a single point to manage access to data and processes for improved productivity.

Open, standards-based interoperability and integration ensure applications can support virtually any user interface (.NET, Java, *ML, Web services, GUI, character). OpenEdge Application Server supports a unique client solution for deploying rich user interfaces over the Internet: WebClient™ with IntelliStream™. This client technology dramatically simplifies and speeds application deployment and access over the Web, saving IT resources and enhancing the end-user's experience. In order to meet the specific demands of Internet-based applications, OpenEdge Application Server includes the WebSpeed® Transaction Server. The WebSpeed Transaction Server is designed for high-throughput transaction-processing over the Internet. WebSpeed provides the context management and processing resources required to handle complex transactions.

There are two editions of OpenEdge Application Server to address varying processing needs.

  • OpenEdge Application Server Basic Edition provides a cost-effective solution for deploying simple yet dynamic business applications to meet the requirements of some small and mid-sized businesses.
  • OpenEdge Application Server Enterprise Edition provides a complete application server solution for mid-size to large deployments. In addition to the capabilities provided in the Basic Edition, the Enterprise Edition provides the foundation for delivering an SOA and next-generation integration, including Web services, SonicMQ messaging, and Sonic ESB.

For configurations that require load balancing and failover, the NameServer Load Balancer (an add-on to the Application Server Enterprise Edition) further ensures resource management and application reliability.
